The Johns Hopkins Hospital Episcopal Chaplaincy If you or a loved one has ever had to visit a hospital for any length of time, you know that it can be a frightening time. Hospital stays for any reason remind us of just how fragile life can be and how dependent we are on the work of so many others for our health and well being. The Diocese of Maryland is committed to providing a sacramental presence at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for your spiritual support during a hospital stay for you or for a loved one. If you would like prayer, communion, annointing, or just a listening ear, please contact the Episcopal chaplain, Rev. Tammy Wooliver, at the number listed below.
A SHORT HISTORY: For nearly one hundred years, the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Maryland has been in a unique relationship with the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Church of Our Savior, founded in 1844, was located directly across Broadway facing the main entrance of the hospital. It was a very active congregation and itself experienced a major overhaul, both in terms of physical space and congregational make-up, particularly during the 1960’s. After it was replaced by a more modern brick structure, Church of Our Savior was renamed, The Church of the Holy Covenant. This was in part an effort to covenant with the African American local population with a pledge to work together. The Rev. Herman de Brandi, PhD served as rector during this time. During his tenure, de Brandi founded and supervised The Pastoral Training Institute, a three month residential program for ordained clergy and postulants for holy orders in the Episcopal Church. Sleeping facilities were provided in the Church building in addition to assigned and monitored pastoral care work at the hospital among the Episcopal patients. At this point no financial assistance was provided, at least not until the church was sold. Church of the Holy Covenant was sold to Hopkins in the mid 1980’s and moved to another location in Baltimore. An agreement ensued between the Diocese of MD and JHH. Part of the proceeds of the sale was put in an endowment to help fund an Episcopal Chaplain and the hospital agreed to provide an office space for such a chaplain. An Episcopal Committee was also established to provide oversight and support to the Episcopal Chaplain. Over the years several chaplains have come and gone and more recently the job description expanded to include supervisory training in an ACPE program. Contact the Chaplain The Rev. Tammy Wooliver |
